What types of software are developed using SS7/Sigtran?

An ss7 software can be a simple application, which does only an HLR lookup or it can be a big complex software e.g Home Location Register or HLR.  Following is a brief list of software expertise for signaling component. 

1. Home Location Register (HLR) –  Software development provides full feature GSM HLR along with the AUC.  We do development using commercial Dialogic and opensource Mobicents Ss7 stack. GSM HLR works over the GSM MAP protocol layer.  We develop Call, SMS, GPRS (internet), and other services in HLR.  A service provider can take advantage of a customized HLR option. In customized HLR option, we can deliver only the required functionalities. 
2. Short Messaging Center (SMSC) – A software over SS7 and SMPP for providing Mobile Originated and Mobile Terminated Short Messages.
3. Camel Gateway (IN-SCP) – Provides software services for Intelligent Networks. In prepaid charging, Camel is the protocol that provides signaling over SS7 for online charging.   In software development services, we provide support for MO/MT voice, SMS, and Mobile Data. 

Who can take The Advantages of SS7 software development?

Any service provider, who connects to the mobile operator over SS7 and provides services to the mobile subscribers. It can be an MVNO, MNO, Bulk SMS or any other. For MVNO it reduces the cost of upgrading the systems for features.   

Sigtran Software development and SS7?

The sigtran is the set of new protocol layers, uses SCTP protocol for transport of SS7 messages. The user of sigtran layer is an SS7 application or an SS7 layer.  The application e.g SMSC, HLR etc. is the same for SS7 or Sigtran. So if you have already developed an application over ss7, there will be only an underlying layer of sigtran that will be used in place of the SS7 layer.

To understand better, let’s assume an MVNO is running an HLR over SS7 cards (E1 link). The HLR will have MAP/TCAP/SCCP/MTP3/MTP2/MTP1 underlying layers for GSM MAP messages.  When the MVNO wants to move HLR over Sigtran, only the transport will change. The new underlying stack will be MAP/TCAP/SCCP/M3UA/SCTP/IP.  M3UA is a sigtran layer.
